New York Abilities Expo

Every year John and I attend the New York Abilities Expo.  It’s an annual three day event whereby various products for the disabled are showcased.  As John and I both work on Friday and Sunday is an abbreviated day in terms of events, John and I chose to attend Saturday.

We checked out a martial arts show featuring black belts and red belts from a New Jersey school whose martial arts school caters to those with special needs.  We avoided the events that were repeats of previous years as we’re pretty old school at this, and we also avoided the kiddie events like face painting.  I would have liked to attend the dance event, but that was Friday.  I spent part of the day lounging in the conference area with my laptop so I could work on my writing while John roamed around trying to figure out what products he wanted to look at or test.

Once John was ready we looked at some cushions for his shower chair, some clothes, a patient-lift suitable for traveling, a robotic arm, and something that could be the very rough equivalent of an exoskeleton.  I don’t know the exact name of the last product so I’ll stick with exoskeleton for now, but John and I both thought this product was the neatest one.  It gave John a greater range of mobility to do things on his own than he has in a while.

All in all a very good day.

Particularly since the world didn’t end.  I just had to toss in that last bit.
